Up Ahead

Tuesday, October 31, 2006

Life has been sort of mimicking a series of waves with its ups and downs.

My birthday is coming up in 3 weeks, and I'm pretty much looking forward to it, what with the planning of a modest do with select close friends. The last birthday party I had was probably sometime back in the early '90s when we'd put up balloons and wear pointy cardboard hats.

I suppose for most, turning 21 calls for extravagant bashes that involve truckloads of people -- ergo more presents -- and getting delightfully intoxicated.

So maybe I'm not like most.

(But ok except the intoxicated part.)

:)

In other news, Wurh is no more, but now there's Culturepush!

Early Bird Special

Thursday, October 26, 2006

Got a very pleasant surprise yesterday when dubby and bunny dropped by to visit this poor little shopgirl at work.

dubby: [wordlessly plonks a paperbag on the counter]
belle: [suspicious look] What is that!
dubby: You see la.
belle: [peers warily into bag. sees a box with a card atop it which is partially obscured by the bag's rope. gingerly nudges rope aside. card reads "belle"] OHMYGOD.

So that's how it transpired; the gifting and accepting of my early birthday present.

Thanks again. I love surprises
:)

I Hate Everything About You

Tuesday, October 24, 2006

Sometimes I don't know if I'm sensitive or some people are just real fuckers.

Every day, I come into contact with so many types of people: some are nice, some are okay, and some simply nudge me closer to becoming a total misanthrope.
I suppose these things don't actually bother me that much, since I tend to forget them soon after the moment passes, and once I get off work, they are merely fodder for amusing anecdotes.

I have my highs and lows, whether I'm feeling fairly sociable or am in a don't-give-a-shit mood, between which I can swing to and fro many times in the course of a day.
But it feels like the lows, coupled with mental and physical tiredness, have been chipping away at the facade I put up for my job, and I'm slowly leaking the disdain that's been accumulating.

I am starting to feel like maybe I can't keep this up much longer.

Quickie

Monday, October 23, 2006

Say "see you later!" to the weekend - it's back to the daily grind.

Saturday was another day spent down at Arab St and Haji Lane, armed with cameras of all shapes and sizes. The heat and humidity was ridiculous that day, but nevertheless, we had fun exploring the quaint shops tucked away in the hidden pockets of the alleyways. I even came away with a new acquisition!

Yay :)

Paths

Friday, October 20, 2006

I'm slouched behind the counter, stifling yawn #184372 of the day, when I hear the clacking of stiletto heels across the floor of the mall. I look up to see a flurry of white satin - a wedding dress. The bride is accompanied by another lady, perhaps a sister or a friend, and they've stopped to fumble with the train, right outside the entrance of our shop, and squarely within my line of vision.
I watch as they attempt to find the best way to move on without trampling and possibly tripping over the dress. My eyes immediately travel up to the bride's face, as I try to imagine what is going through her mind. This is what most people deem the biggest day of their lives. Is it the happiest day of hers? Is she in love with the man she's about to meet at the end of that aisle? Does she feel beautiful in that white dress?

The sister (I've decided), gathers up the train, and off they go in a somewhat hurried manner. Soon they're out of sight, my imagination runs out of road, and I am once again just the apathetic girl behind the counter.

Customers From Planet Stupid: Part One

Wednesday, October 18, 2006

(i.e. Customers From Hell - Aggression + Stupidity x 100)

Customer: (picks up a black bag) Does this come in other colours?

Me: No, just black.
Customer: Not even navy blue?
Me: (raising an eyebrow) No, sorry, there's only one colour.
Customer: (admiring herself with bag in mirror) Brown also no?
Me: (where the fuck do these people come from?!) Uh, only ONE? colour?

SERIOUSLY? This woman was obviously busy falling on her head in primary school when they were teaching the difference between the usage of singular and plural.

The Zoo: Revisited

Monday, October 16, 2006

Up until last Wednesday, the last time I was at the zoo was probably 5 or 6 years ago, back when it was still the Singapore Zoological Gardens.

We arrived filled with excitement and anticipation, eager to jolt some latent childhood memories. Ooh-ing and aah-ing at practically every turn, it was like we were seeing everything for the first time. It was quite refreshing.

3 hours of trudging around later, it was almost closing time and we were still trying to make our way out of the premises. Strolling at quite a leisurely pace, I pondered out loud the potentiality of getting locked in the zoo. Walking past the enclosures, all the animals were nowhere in sight. It was almost as though they'd all gone home after a day's work, punching out at 6pm to prepare for the graveyard shift at the Night Safari.

It was lovely day of nice, simple fun. And of course, good company helps too. :)

Mail Order Delight

Monday, October 09, 2006

They're here! My Flickr MiniCards, that is. They're self-explanatory, cute as hell, and very affordable. Better still, I got my pack of ten for free. Check 'em out.

On a related note, I love getting things in the mail. Although the only envelopes addressed to me are from the CPF Board and DBS. Woohoo.

I suppose the fascination's been carried over from childhood, and I still get excited when I see my name in the mail stack. They ought to have services that periodically send you mail, just so you have something to look forward to. It's sad that people hardly ever write letters anymore. I've hoarded all the hand-written notes and letters that I've received in the past, and love the feeling of nostalgia I get everytime I go through them.

Next up in the post: Threadless tees! I can't wait.

[edit 15/10/06]: Was unable to publish my blog for the past week, hence you're seeing this entry very late, and the tees have been procured. Yay! [/edit]

Brunch and Beyond

Monday, October 02, 2006

One thing that I probably miss most since I began this job is the privilege of proper meals. On the days that'd I'd be working the late shift, my pathetic excuse for dinner would be quick nips into the pantry every now and then for crackers or the suchlike. How I would long for meals that didn't come out of plastic containers and styrofoam packets! The occasional home-cooked meals that I manage to make it for suddenly seem like great delicacies.

Hence, what better way to spend a Sunday off than a nice brunch at the much talked about Wild Rocket?

Stepping in, I was a little surprised by the restaurant itself. Somehow I wasn't expecting it to be as laidback as it was - a good thing of course. The Wild Rocket burger was fantastic, every bit as good as they say; and despite leaving me absolutely stuffed, the strawberry cheesecake was divine and well worth the misery of a bloated tummy.

We proceeded to walk off our meal by traipsing down Arab St, with photo opportunities in mind. In the end, we spent more time lingering in quaint little shops, handing over paltry amounts in exchange for bits of nostalgia.

Caught Little Miss Sunshine after, and it was great! Expect your eyes to well up - from moving scenes and tears from laughing fits. Loved it.

Dinner was courtesy of the one with the culinary prowess, and after tasting the melt-in-your-mouth Wagyu beef just off the heat, I immediately revoked my previous declaration that I'd had enough beef for the day.

All in all, it was a fantastic day. Hope you guys had just as good a weekend.
